Traveling in Europe on the Yoder European Heritage Tour in September, three tour members were surprised to discover a photo of their father in the museum at the Trachselwald castle in Canton Bern, Switzerland. The siblings from Virginia — Karen Shelly Smucker, Jean Smucker Fisher and Gary Smucker — found a display with a photo of their father working for the Mennonite Central Committee portable meat canner in 1946, preparing food to send to devastated areas in Europe after World War II. Jokingly, the siblings now can say that their father is in Trachselwald prison, just as their Anabaptist ancestors were imprisoned for their faith there in the 1600s.
