The Mennonite Historical Society of Canada released a documentary about Russian Mennonite migration to Canada during its annual general meeting Jan. 23-24 in Winnipeg, Man.

The Russlaender Migration: From Revolution to Reflection commemorates 100 years since the migration in the 1920s and the cross-country train trip that followed. It was produced by Refuge 31 films and guided by the Centre for Transnational Mennonite Studies. It will be shown in locations across Canada before being available on YouTube. Funding was provided by the government of Canada and private funders.

Bert Friesen was presented MHSC’s Award of Excellence for his work as a genealogist, author, editor and contributor to provincial and national Mennonite historical societies. He challenged MHSC members that more work needs to be done to provide access to records through digitization and deal with how to archive material now being created digitally.

The Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (GAMEO) counted 386,000 visits from around the world. In 2025, 41 new articles were created and 71 existing articles edited.

The Mennonite Archival Information Database (MAID) counted 99,830 images and 317,299 descriptions of photos and archival records at the end of 2025. The database, made up of partners from Canada, the U.S. and Paraguay, last year welcomed its 18th partner, the Hutterite Historical Association.

MHSC was formed to write a history of Mennonites in Canada, and three volumes were created. Brian Froese of Canadian Mennonite University and Laureen Harder-Gissing of the Mennonite Archives of Ontario are working now on Volume 4, focusing on the Mennonite experience in Canada from 1970 to 2020.
